The water comes back every storm. So does the guy who never finished.

Standing water and a wet basement are a grading and discharge problem before they are a French drain problem. We diagnose where the water actually goes, price the fix as one fixed number, and finish the scope we signed.

Drain Tile Installation Cost in Edwardsville, IL

Direct answer: Interior drain tile runs roughly $60 to $110 per linear foot installed and manages water that has already reached the footing. Exterior drain tile costs more because it requires excavating to the footing from outside, and it stops the water earlier. Neither is automatically right — the choice follows from where the water is coming from, which is a diagnosis and not a product decision.

Interior and exterior drain tile installation cost compared

Interior drain tile means breaking a channel in the basement slab at the perimeter, laying perforated pipe in stone, and running it to a sump pit. The work happens inside, in any weather, and the landscaping stays untouched. It is the more common quote in this area for that reason.

Exterior drain tile means excavating down the outside of the foundation to the footing, laying the same system there, and backfilling. It intercepts water before it reaches the wall, which is structurally the better place to stop it, and it costs more because of the excavation, the restoration, and the risk of hitting utilities.

When drain tile is the wrong purchase

Drain tile is designed for hydrostatic pressure — water in the soil pushing against the foundation, typically because the water table rises seasonally. It is the correct answer for that problem and an expensive answer for a downspout discharging two feet from the wall.

If the basement is dry for months and wet within hours of a storm, exhaust the exterior first: extend the downspout discharge, correct the grade, and check that the sump is not returning water to the same soil. Those cost a fraction of a tile system and they solve a large share of these calls.

What belongs on a drain tile quote

Linear footage, pipe type and diameter, stone type and depth, the vapour barrier or wall membrane if one is included, the sump pit specification, and how the slab is restored. A quote that names a system by brand and gives a single number is not comparable to another quote.

Ask specifically about the discharge. A perfect tile system that discharges beside the foundation has moved the water four feet and put it back where it started.

Drain tile installation cost questions

How much does drain tile installation cost?

Interior perimeter drain tile tied into a sump typically runs $60 to $110 per linear foot in this area, and a full basement commonly lands in the $6,000 to $12,000 range. Exterior footing drains run $95 to $180 per linear foot because of the excavation and restoration involved. A partial run on a single problem wall is often $3,500 to $8,000.

Is interior or exterior drain tile better?

Exterior drain tile stops water before it reaches the wall, which is structurally preferable, but it costs more and disturbs landscaping, hardscape, and anything buried near the foundation. Interior drain tile manages water that has already arrived and is far less disruptive. Where the water is coming from should decide it, not which one a contractor installs most often.

Do I need drain tile or just better outside drainage?

If the basement stays dry for long stretches and only takes water within hours of heavy rain, the cause is usually surface water and the cheaper exterior fixes should be exhausted first. Drain tile is for hydrostatic pressure from a seasonally high water table, which shows up as water arriving regardless of recent rainfall.

Does drain tile installation require breaking the basement floor?

Interior systems do, because the pipe sits at the footing under the slab perimeter. A channel roughly a foot wide is cut, the system is laid in stone, and the slab is patched. Exterior systems leave the floor alone but require excavating the outside of the foundation down to the footing instead.

What we put in writing before anyone digs

  • Fixed-price written quote before we break ground. Trenching turns up surprises; the price does not move because of them unless you approve a change order in writing first.
  • Zero-obligation site visit. If the honest answer is that the water is doing what water should do and you do not need a drain, that is the answer you get, in writing, at no cost.
  • The diagnosis names where the water comes from before it names the product. Grading, downspout discharge, and the water table get checked first; a French drain is a conclusion, not an opening bid.
  • Full-width trench, wrapped stone, and rigid perforated pipe as standard. We do not install narrow single-pipe trenches or pre-socked corrugated sections, because those are the installs that fail in year three.
  • Itemized scope showing linear feet, trench depth, stone volume, and discharge point as separate lines. No lump-sum 'drainage work.'
  • A named discharge point on the plan, with the permit or easement dependency listed separately so you can see which clocks we do not control.
  • If the system does not move water after the first heavy rain, we come back and correct it at our cost, not yours.
